When another person attacks us, we show emptiness and In (Chinese: “Yin”), giving them nothing to press against. They then flow back to their position and we follow, sticking to them with power, Yo (Chinese: “Yang”) and fullness. In a self-defense situation (or in any type of partner work at training) we are taught to look for the openings and gaps in the opponent’s technique in order to take advantage of it, in effect looking for emptiness in order to fill it yourself. Refer to The Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi.
The use of forward energy is not brute force, rather a combination of body mechanics, proper weight distribution and precise footwork. Using these techniques to maintain control of the centerline (an imaginary line running down the middle of the body) allows practitioners to navigate around threats, maintain a dominant position and exploit opening in the opponent’s defense.
